| Kelowna Canadian Italian Club presents BRINGING OUR LEGACY HOME |
2026 is a momentous year for Kelowna Canadian Italian Club. In addition to being the Club’s 60th Anniversary, it also marks 10 years since we started the Legacy Project. This was a project to document the Legacy of Kelowna’s Italian community while we could still hear it first-hand from those with lived experience. For the past 10 years we have been collecting stories, recording the memoirs of our founders and creating awareness of the significant contributions of those Italians who have called Kelowna home for almost 150 years now.
This project has produced over 180 family stories, an award-winning documentary on the first Italian family to settle in the Okanagan and a joint feature exhibit at the Kelowna Museum. It has been honoured by Heritage BC, the national Italian Canadian Archives Project and the Central Okanagan Heritage Society. And this June 25th, as a celebration of Italian Heritage Month, we are hosting a special event to Bring Our Legacy Home.
A full-length documentary will tell the story of that Legacy, including the history of both Italian Clubs, the first before World War II and with a special focus on our club, started in 1966. We were so fortunate to have been able to talk to several of the people who contributed to that legacy, including many who - unfortunately - are no longer here to celebrate with us. This will debut at Kelowna’s beautiful Mary Irwin Theatre. After, we are hosting a celebratory reception at the historic Laurel Packing House, with many of the families who participated in the documentary in attendance. During this reception, we’ll also unveil a new website which will be a permanent digital home for our project.
